In a country full of different struggles, music happens to be one of the few things that put smiles on the faces of Nigerians. The quality of talent present in Nigeria is quite huge but only few gets to cross the bridge to stardom.
Amongst the super talented Nigerian artistes is Temi Mine, a prolific songwriter and singer who infuses smooth pop vocals and sweet Afro sound into contemporary Afrobeats. He is creating a unique brand of Afrobeats sound that is appealing to the soul and put smiles on people’s faces. His writing skill is a force to reckon with, makes you stay glued to his music and put his songs on repeat. When it comes to vocals, you really just have to respect this guy, not someone with Wande Coal type of vocals but his vocals are capable of putting you in your feelings while listening to his songs. One of the things he does differently is his choice of beats and instruments used on his songs, he blends his vocals with the beat, makes them become one, something to pierce through the flesh and flow through your body system like electric current.
Temi Mine started music in the early 2010s, he grew up listening to legends like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade and that’s how he fell in love with music. His love for music grew outrageously with the major breakthrough of Afrobeats superstar “Wizkid” in 2010, seeing a young artiste break into Nigerian music industry was something that wasn’t common as at that time. However, this once-in-a-blue-moon breakthrough inspired him to be a recording and performing artiste. In addition, he said “seeing a young artiste blow at that time made me realize I could be just like him, he inspired the youth to chase their dream of being a musician. I remember when Superstar album dropped, everybody started singing different tracks on the album, the youth started dressing like him, carrot jeans, G shock watch and Obey Cap became natiowide uniform for Nigerian youths”. When he was asked how did his music journey begin, he said “I bought Superstar album 4 different times because I overplayed the CD, I used to pause-play the tracks trying to learn the lyrics and also sing my own lyrics on the tracks, something like a cover of the tracks. It was fun and pleasurable for me, that was the moment I knew I wanted to do music. “Love my baby” was my favorite track on the album, and I’ve always wanted to do something like that, I channeled my love for the track into making “Gimme Luv”, drawing inspiration from the song.
Temi Mine grew up in Ibadan, where he also started his educational journey, but he had to leave Nigeria for Cyprus to further his education in 2013. However, leaving Nigeria didn’t kill his dream to be an artiste, in an environment dominated by whites, he built an audience for his music over the years in his school and his neighborhood, opening the eyes of his colleagues and neighbors to the beauty of Afrobeats culture. Furthermore in the conversation with Temi Mine, he said “seeing what artistes like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and Olamide have contributed to the propagation of Afrobeats, all I have in mind is that, I can be just like them in my own way. I want to achieve what they’ve achieved, I believe I can”.
Temi has dropped a self titled EP “Temi Mine” filled with 3 beautiful written tracks, but “Gimme Luv” happens to be the center of attention, it’s a song written for lovers to put them in their feelings, create a special bond between lovers and strengthen the feelings shared between them, however the song sampled Wizkid’s “Love My Baby” melody, and it spiced up the whole song. From the vocals to the production, you really can’t resist the urge to put this song on repeat, another thing is, if you don’t have someone to sing this song to, you are going to wish you have that person.
Every year we get to see the emergence of some talented artistes making their way to mainstream, Rema, Fireboy,Joeboy & Tems took over our playlists, and airplay in 2018/19, Bella Schmurda and Omah Lay did the same in 2020 and in 2021, we’ve had Ayra Starr, Ruger, Lojay etc crossed the bridge to mainstream. Furthermore, as it stands, the odds are high that Temi Mine will be the latest artiste to cross the bridge shortly, and hit our playlists and airplay. The quality of talent he possesses is so scary for such an emerging artiste, his music sounds so much like he is so experienced in the game. His smooth vocals is something girls will fall in love with at first listening, I am certain he will have more female fans due to the nature of his sound, his fanbase will be dominated by girls for sure.
Nigerian music industry can be very competitive, the road might looks rough but Temi Mine is not an artiste that cannot be stopped from reaching the top spot, he is still yet to unlock his full potential, he is bound to develop on his way to becoming one Nigerian finest artistes.
